Eddie Mathews 22.36%
Willie McCovey 24.23%

Rod Carew 31.41%
Barry Bonds 32.90%
George Brett 33.27%
Tony Gwynn 37.93%

Duke Snider had a low percentage because he was the lone real lefty threat in a Brooklyn Dodger lineup with dominant righty power.  See this post:

Duke Snider died at 84.

During his five consecutive 40 HR seasons (1953-1957) Snider hit these HR against lefty pitchers: 3, 2, 3, 1, 0.  1957: 40 homers, all against righty pitchers, probably a record.  For perspective, all 1957 Dodgers against lefties: 294 AB / 8 HR = 36.75 AB per HR.  The entire Dodger team hit only 8 homers against lefty pitchers.  Snider was very well protected in a heavily right handed hitting lineup, which faced few lefties.

In 1957 Hall of Fame southpaw Warren Spahn won the MLB Cy Young award.  He faced the Dodgers only once: Sunday, August 4, 1957 1:32PM, County Stadium.  Spahn relieved in the ninth and faced two batters: Don Zimmer and Jim Gilliam, retiring both; Spahn was credited with a save.

...  (1953-1957) Both Snider individually and all Dodgers faced less than 11% lefty pitchers

Ted Williams: lefty batter v. lefty pitcher - percent of PA.

In a recent post I restricted my analysis of lefty batters to seasons 1950 through 2012 because play-by-play data is scarce before 1950.  A friend sent me this link about research done on Ted Williams:

http://www.baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?16742-Ted-Williams-vs-Left-handed-Pitchers/page18&s=87e5efa91887134e9acb97ad6590a438

It has details on basic stats per season for Williams against lefty pitchers, although oddly not also against righty pitchers.  Obviously, we could figure that out by subtracting from Williams totals.

I noticed a couple of things.

1. The researcher relies on OPS, not OPS+, thus enhancing Williams stats due to Williams playing his home games in a good hitting park.  OPS Home 1.148, Road 1.082.  tOPS+ Home 106, Road 94.

2. Williams seemed to have a very low percentage of plate appearances (PA) against lefty pitchers: 21%.

The researcher concludes that Williams hit very well against lefty pitchers.

BA OBP SLG OPS
.311 .436 .493 0.929 v. lefty pitchers
.323 .447 .513 0.960 v. lefty pitchers before 1958
.344 .482 .634 1.115 career

baseball-reference.com had a .298 batting average for Williams against lefty pitchers for 1950-1960.

Ichiro Suzuki: only lefty hitter with higher BA against lefty pitchers.

Ichiro Suzuki, at least since 1950, is the only lefty batter with a higher batting average (BA) against lefty pitchers than against righty pitchers. See previous post.

Lefty batters 1950-2012 batting average (BA)

As documented here previously, righty/lefty splits are reliable only back to about 1950 when a high percentage of the data is derived from play-by-play data rather than from box scores.  With box scores a batter's stats are attributed to the handedness of the starting pitcher.

I've used some of the cool new functions at baseball-reference.com to try to get a cross section of the best left batters from 1950 through 2012 using Ted Williams as my minimum criteria since he has the least data for a great batter during those years and I wanted Williams included.

There are four swipes.  Note the batters who cross the categories.

Tony Gwynn is second in both pitching splits; Rod Carew is the only other in both pitching top fives.  Here are the top fives.  Cruise down to see longer, more detailed lists.
