Jackie Robinson was NL MVP.  Despite being last among Yankee regulars in OPS+ with 88, Phil Rizzuto was second to Ted Williams in AL MVP voting; Pee Wee Reese was 1949 all city SS.

In their first head to head comparison Roy Campanella beat Yogi Berra.  Duke Snider joined 1948 newcomer Gil Hodges in the Dodger starting lineup.  Dodgers Carl Furillo and Don Newcombe made all city for the first time.

New manager Casey Stengel led the Yankees to a 4-1 World Series win over the Dodgers despite Joe DiMaggio playing only 76 regular season games.  The Giants in Leo Durocher's first full season as their manager under performed.

In the 1940s the Yankees beat the Dodgers in the World Series three times with three different managers:
1941 Joe McCarthy beat Leo Durocher
1947 Bucky Harris beat Burt Shotton
1949 Casey Stengel beat Burt Shotton.

The Yanks and Dodgers would meet again in 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956.
