Walter Alston replaced Chuck Dressen as Dodger manager and despite finishing second had the Dodgers 11 games over their Pyth.  Leo Durocher led the Giants to a World Series sweep of 111 win Cleveland and Casey Stengel failed to win the pennant after five consecutive World Series championships in his first five seasons as Yankee manager despite his team winning the most games with Stengel as manager.  Durocher replaced Stengel as all city manager after Stengel's five consecutive.  The Giants drew more fans than the Dodgers but the Yankees were still all city in attendance.

This was the first of three consecutive years in which New York players won both MVP awards.  Back from the Army Mays hit 41 homers and made the catch in the WS against Vic Wertz.  Duke Snider hit 40 homers for the second of five consecutive seasons of at least 40 and Gil Hodges led the city with 42, tieing Snider's Dodger team record; second to Ted Kluszewski (CIN) 49.  Jackie Robinson became a utility player dividing games played among: OF 74, 3B 48, 2B 4.  Don Hoak became the regular third baseman.  With OPS+ 135 Robinson should be all city so I placed him in LF instead of Sandy Amoros who played only about five more games than Robinson in LF.

For the Yankees Gil McDougald became all city as he moved from third to second to replace Billy Martin, who spent 1954 in the Army, and Andy Carey became the regular at third.  Hank Bauer broke the five year streak of Dodger Carl Furillo as all city RF.  Mickey Mantle quietly had OPS+ 158 behind Mays (175) and Snider (171); tough city.

Lefty Johnny Antonelli was the star pitcher for the Giants: 21-7, ERA+ 178; other Giant starters: Ruben Gomez (all city righty), Sal Maglie, Don Liddle.  Don Newcombe returned from the Army to the Dodgers and pitched 144 innings; Carl Erskine threw 260 innings.  Whitey Ford replaced Eddie Lopat as the star lefty for the Yankees; Bob Grim was 20-6 in 37 games but only 20 starts; final season for 37 year old Allie Reynolds: 13-4, ERA+ 110, 157 innings.
