Cy Young or Sayonara: big failures in the 2014 tournament.

Cy Young

Not an original line but it makes the point.  Recent winners of the Cy Young award as best pitcher in either the American or National Conference of the Major Baseball League (MBL) collectively did very poorly in 2014 tournament.

Giants:
Tim Lincecum: 2008 and 2009; not on first round roster
Jake Peavy: 2007 San Diego

Dodgers:
Clayton Kershaw: likely 2014, 2013, 2011
Zack Greinke: 2009 (KC)

Tigers:
Max Scherzer 2013
David Price 2012 (Tampa)
Justin Verlander 2011

Peavy and Greinke are the only ones to start a game that his team won.  Peavy the only one to win.

Kershaw, generally, recognized as the best pitcher on the planet lost TWO games and blew leads in both: 6-1, 2-0.

Verlander also had no decision but his Tigers lost the game.  The Tigers were swept with the three most recent CY winners starting their games.

Kershaw pitched OK and Price pitched well in losing their deciding games, each giving up a home run that accounted for all of their opponent's runs to: Matt Adams and Nelson Cruz respectively.  The Cruz homer was a cheapie.

Go figure.

From Eric: In the first 3 games of the 1996 WS, Braves started Smoltz, Maddux, Glavine who were the last three Cy Young winners (Glavine 91, Maddux 92-95, Smoltz 96).

That's a stretch ... but a good one.
