Visits to the mound are a joke. See last night's Cubs - Giants game.

Sunday in Washington the Redskins NFL game had five times as many TV viewers as the Nationals tournament baseball game.

Last night in San Francisco the Cubs scored four runs in the top of the 9th to win 6-5 and close out that five game series. I went to bed at 11:30 PM New York time when the Giants manager went to the mound to remove his second of five relief pitchers to work in the 9th inning. This as the huddled masses shivered in the cold. It's autumn now but Mark Twain wrote that his coldest winter was a summer in San Francisco. The dugouts, of course, are heated.

The first relief pitcher allowed a single, the second a walk. Two pitchers for two plate appearances. Starting pitcher had gone 8 innings: 2 hits, two runs, Giants leading 5-2. That's when I went to bed.
