Update: a friend pointed out that rosters expand in September, which we call know except when we don't consider that a game is played in September. Cancel the red alert.
In writing the previous post I noticed something inexplicable.
Thursday, September 7, 1978 Yankees 15, Red Sox 3
Friday, September 8, 1978 Yankees 13, Red Sox 2
In that first game, Yanks substituted for six non-pitchers. Including the DH that's 15 players, suggesting that they had only ten pitchers.
In the second games all nine Yankee batters had substitutes: 18 players. I even counted them. How can that be? Only seven pitchers?
Click the links and see for yourself. Explanations welcome.
