The 1961 Yankees shattered the old team record of 221 by the 1947 New York Giants by hitting 240 HR in the first 162 game season, which replaced the old 154 game schedule. The American League adopted the ill conceived Designated Hitter (DH) rule in 1973: DH hit for pitchers.
