OPS+ -- OPS+
100*[OBP/lg OBP + SLG/lg SLG - 1]
Adjusted to the player’s ballpark(s)
WAR -- Wins Above Replacement for position players
A single number that presents the number of wins the player added
to the team above what a replacement player (think AAA or AAAA) would add.
Scale: 8+ MVP Quality, 5+ All-Star Quality, 2+ Starter,
0-2 Reserve, < 0 Replacement Level
Developed by Sean Smith of BaseballProjection.com
oWAR -- Offensive Wins Above Replacement (everything but Fielding)
The same statistic as Wins Above Replacement for Position
Players (WAR), but with the fielding value excluded.
oWAR + dWAR does not equal WAR.
Adding would count positions twice.
Contains the factor for batting stats, baserunning, a positional adjustment, and the replacement player adjustment.
Factors developed by Sean Smith of BaseballProjection.com
dWAR -- Defensive Wins Above Replacement for position players
A defensive measure of wins above replacement, but given
only the defensive stats of the player and his position adjustment. For this calculation, we use a
replacement level on defense is the league average.
Based on Baseball Info Solutions defensive runs saved from 2003 on
and total zone rating developed by Sean Smith of BaseballProjection.com previously

position adjustment:

Wins Above Replacement (WAR) includes a positional adjustment to account for the fact that players at different positions have different defensive responsibilities and values. This adjustment adds value for players at harder positions, like catcher and shortstop, and subtracts value for those at easier positions, like first base and designated hitter, to create a uniform scale for comparing players across all positions.
How it works
  • On a uniform scale: The adjustment puts all positions on the same scale by adding runs for more difficult positions and subtracting for easier ones.
  • Quantifying defensive value: It quantifies the idea that an "average" shortstop is more valuable defensively than an "average" first baseman because the shortstop position is naturally more difficult to play.
  • Calculated based on research: The values are based on historical data and research into player performance, with specific run values assigned to each position.
Positional adjustment values (Baseball-Reference (bWAR) used in this post)
The exact values for positional adjustments vary between the two major WAR providers, FanGraphs (fWAR) and Baseball-Reference (bWAR). Values are typically expressed per 1,350 innings played.
Position Baseball-Reference (bWAR)FanGraphs (fWAR)
Catcher (C)+9 runs+12.5 runs
Shortstop (SS)+7 runs+7.5 runs
Center Field (CF)+2.5 runs+2.5 runs
Second Base (2B)+3 runs+2.5 runs
Third Base (3B)+2 runs+1.5 runs
Right Field (RF)-7 runs-7.5 runs
Left Field (LF)-7 runs-7.5 runs
First Base (1B)-9.5 runs-12.5 runs
Designated Hitter (DH)-15 runs-17.5 runs
Note: These figures can change over time as defensive skill requirements and player usage evolve.
