If you bat, you also play the field. Six is the minimum number so that a batter does not come up with himself on base.
If you have Shohei Ohtani or Babe Ruth, he can be one of the six in the batting order on days when he pitches. On other days, he must play the field.
Ohtani has played 8 innings in the field other than as pitcher. Ridiculous.
This would increase the number of Plate Appearances dramatically.
But what about the records? Who cares? In the National League in 2025 and in the American League in 1968, there was only one hitter with a .300 Batting Average. BA .400 was done most recently in 1941. What the heck? Wake the heck up! The traditional rules have put you to sleep.
