30 homers, age 22 or younger

This is a complimentary post to:

30 homers, age 37 and older Tuesday, September 1, 2015

It's been done 39 times, including multiple times by some players... Age is determined before July 1...

Hank Aaron has the top: 47 at age 37 in 1971.  Aaron also has the biggest gap between homers and age: 10.  Also the biggest percentage difference: 27%.

30 homers in a season for players 22 or younger has been done 37 times, including Bryce Harper this season.

Aaron's long time teammate on the Braves, Eddie Mathews, leads the young sluggers by matching Aaron at 47, career highs for each.  Mathews was only 21 years old, so also like Aaron he has the biggest gap between homers and age and biggest percent difference: 26 and 124%.

40 homers were hit seven times by the young sluggers.  Mathews was the only one who did it twice.  These players had career highs: DiMaggio, Bench, Ott; Bench hit exactly 40 at age 24 but neither DiMaggio nor Ott ever hit 40 again.  Ott is the youngest player ever to hit at least 40: age 20.

Young sluggers also on the old guys list: Frank Robinson and Ted Williams.

Two seasons by young sluggers: Pujols, Rodriguez, Horner, Mathews, Robinson, Stanton, Foxx, Canseco, Cabrera, Trout, Williams.

Two went on to hit at least 50 homers in a season:
Foxx: 58,50
Rodriguez: 57,54,52.

Led their league when 22 or younger in a 30 homer season:
HR: Mathews, DiMaggio, Bench, Gonzalez, Williams, Conigliaro.  Harper currently leading.
RBI: Bench, Williams, Trout (more than 150 but did not lead: DiMaggio, Foxx, Ott)
BB: Williams, Ott
HBP: Robinson
BA: Williams, Rodriguez, Pujols
OBP: Williams, Ott (Harper leading)
SLG: Williams, DiMaggio, Stanton, Powell (Harper leading)
OPS: Williams (Harper leading)

Six did it at age 20 with Conigliaro the only 20 year old leading the league: 32 in 1965.

Conspicuous by their absence:
Willie Mays: 41 in 1954, age 23; Mays missed all but 34 games in 1952 and all of 1953 in the Army.
Mickey Mantle: 37 in 1955, age 23

Both Mays and Mantle hit 50 homers for the first of two times at age 24:
Mays: 51 in 1955
Mantle 52 in 1956
