Oakland introduced modern mustaches and beards in 1972. The Yankees banned beards in 1976 but rescinded in 2025.

Facial hair comes and goes. The first U.S. president with facial hair was Abraham Lincoln.

Grant, Hayes and Garfield consecutively also had full beards, as did Benjamin Harrison later.

Mustaches only: Arthur, Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft.

So all presidents with facial hair were between 1861-1913. The sitting vice president has a full beard ... well-groomed as the Yankees newly require.

Reggie Jackson was among the first modern players with a beard ... just not with the Yankees.

For spring training of 1972, Reggie Jackson showed up with a mustache. After privately trying to get Jackson to shave it off, Finley instead decided to capitalize on the act of rebellion. He staged a “Mustache Night,” let mustached patrons in for a reduced price, and gave each player a small bonus if they wore mustaches for that night’s game. All players and coaches obliged, and most kept their mustaches all season. A few even sported beards. The team, dubbed “The Mustache Gang” in the press, went on to beat the clean-cut Cincinnati Reds in the World Series.

Joe DiMaggio hit in 56 consecutive games without a beard...

I wish one of the articles had asked Reggie Jackson since he chose to join the Yankees the year after the policy started. He became Mr. October without a beard. Aaron Judge has hit 50 homers three times without a beard. Gerrit Cole won the Cy Young award without a beard.

Juan Soto left the Yankees after one year not for a beard but for money.

The fact that none of the four players on the Yankees Mt. Rushmore had facial hair is not surprising. Hardly any players did 1920-1970.

Yankees captain Aaron Judge:

"I got drafted by this organization, so the very first day I was here, I’ve been shaving since 2013," Judge told the New York Post. "This is what I know, this is what I’m used to. I look around the building, look at old photos of the past legends and people that played here, they all followed that rule, so I just tried to follow on their path."

Joe DiMaggio lucky to be a Yankee before beards.

I'm a Yankee fan. I've had a beard most of my adult life and currently. It's neatly trimmed.

A look back at the most memorable Yankees clean-shaven transformations February 21st, 2025 by David Adler

After nearly 50 years, the Yankees have amended their longstanding facial hair policy to allow "well-groomed beards."

The original policy, for Yankees players to be clean-shaven, was implemented by owner George Steinbrenner in the 1970s. The Boss' son, Hal Steinbrenner, announced the change on Friday...

Here are some of the most famous Yankees haircuts through the years.

My concern is a general lack of discipline including appearance. I was pleasantly surprised by the thoughtfulness of Hal Steinbrenner's remarks.

There are examples of Yankee players deviating in appearance. Wearing white shoes: Brett Gardner. Pants showing no socks to very high socks: Alex Rodriguez. Pulling their shirt out when the game ends: Rafael Soriano. It's called a uniform for a reason. They are supposed to look alike.

The next step will be hair. Even if it's kept short, it will be shaped into ever more bizarre configurations. Look at the Knicks.

Finally, some Yankees have been covered in tattoos. Look at the departed left fielder Alex Verdugo and the current Marcus Stroman who refuses to pitch out of the bullpen.

I wonder if players who have a beard will shave their beards in the future when they join the Yankees out of respect for the traditional look of Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, Judge? I would.

Hal Steinbrenner, tell your GM Brian Cashman to stop whining about 2017 Astros stealing signs.

Geez, enough already. Yankee General Manager (GM) Brian Cashman is still using the Houston Astros sign stealing at home in 2017 ALCS as his excuse for the Yankees not winning a World Series championship in the last 15 years and only one (2009) in the last 24 years.

Does Cashman think that his team stole the 2024 ALCS from Cleveland because the Yankees outspent them 3 to 1?

Yankees: one championship in last 24 years. A fish rots from the head. Thursday, October 31, 2024

The Yankees have the highest AL payroll pretty much every year. Semi-finals (ALCS):
Yankees $291 million
Cleveland $94 million ...

When will the fish stop rotting? Yanks are one for 24 ... and counting.

Most recent championships: 2000 & 2009.

Hal Steinbrenner, youngest of the Steinbrenner kids (four children of the late George Steinbrenner 1930-2010) has been running the New York Yankees for about a decade after his older brother Hank died. Hal inherited incumbent general manager Brian Cashman who had been promoted to GM in February 1998. That's in the previous millennium.

The problems are anything but new. And they are obvious. And documented here:

Yankees Pursuit of $120 Million Slugger May Be ‘Clouded’ by Scandal heavy.com by Sean Deveney Updated Nov 2, 2024

... the Yankees’ sitting on a 15-year World Series championship drought ...

That championship drought has been a point of contention for Cashman, who has long insisted that the 2017 Yankees could well have won the World Series if they were not “cheated” (as he says) by the Houston Astros‘ sign-stealing scandal. Cashman has been openly hostile to all things Astros in the years since ...

(Astro) Alex Bregman is the only star third baseman available in free agency. ... Cashman has continued to take shots at the 2017 Houston team that beat the Yankees in the ALCS, doing so as recently as last week. “I hate the 15-year (pennant drought) because it completely forgets and discounts that some other organization cheated us. … I think we would’ve been advancing,” the GM said in an appearance on MLB Network’s High Heat.

Cashman is a major league weasel in addition to being semi competent. The first rule in boxing: protect yourself at all times.

I never complained about the Astros stealing the signs in 2017. Cashman has not stopped complaining. I looked at the splits of individual Astros and saw no real benefit. For instance in 2017 MVP Jose Altuve hit much better on the road. Of course, Altuve claimed to have not taken the signs, like Monte Irvin in 1951.

Altuve 2017 regular season OPS:
home .835
road 1.082

Houston beat the Yankees 4-3 in games with the home team winning all games. The Yankees scored lots of runs in the three middle games (8, 6, 5) in Yankee Stadium but in Houston they scored: 1, 1, 1, 0. Yankees not scoring had nothing to do with sign stealing.

Obviously, even if they had advanced to the 2017 World Series they had a 50-50 chance of losing.

Oh, Bregman (will be 31 March 30, 2025) has been declining and isn't worth big bucks. But he's the kind of mistake Cashman can't resist.

Alex Bregman OPS+:
2022: 134
2023: 122
2024: 118
