2-0, 15 innings, three hours 45 minutes ... in 1964.

While doing more research on Mickey Mantle hitting in extra innings I came across a game that reminded me of the Juan Marichal v. Warren Spahn July 2, 1963 16 inning game won by the Giants on a home run by Willie Mays.  Time: 4:10.  See:

Monday, October 14, 2013  Four hour 1-0 games.

Saturday, June 6, 1964, 8:02PM, Dodger Stadium
Attendance: 30,496, Time of Game: 3:45
Yankees 2, Angels 0    15 innings

Jim Bouton pitched the first 13 innings for the Yankees.

Dean Chance pitched the first 14 innings for the Angels.

Yanks scored two in the 15th against relief pitcher Willie Smith to win 2-0.  Chance was 20-9, ERA 1.65, ERA+ 200; won the only CyYoung award in 1964.  Chance was known in 1964 for his record against the Yankees: 4-0, 50 innings, one run ... on a homer to Mantle July 28 leading off the 7th, Yanks down 3-0.

Less than four hours for 15 innings.

Yesterday in a semi final tournament game in Detroit the Red Sox won 1-0; time: 3:20.  That's still much too long but way down from the 1-0 Tiger win in Boston Saturday in game one of the seven game series that dragged on for 3:56 even though Boston got only one hit.  Yesterday Justin Verlander pitcher 8 innings for Detroit then manager Jim Leyland used three pitchers to drag out the ninth, including the waddling to the mound changing the pitcher ritual, which any non-brain dead person should find appalling.

Dead time generally and especially between pitches is killing baseball and the people in authority are oblivious to the degradation of their product.
