Mickey Mantle was the king of extra innings based on a minimum of 100 plate appearances (PA).  Mantle had 161 PA.  The detailed data is for seasons 1948-2013, so Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb and other earlier greats are not considered.  This post will look at Mantle's numbers in detail.

Friday, September 27, 2013  Hitting in extra innings since 1948: who has the mantle of success?

The Mick was a total monster in extra innings.  He has by far the highest On Base Plus Slugging averages (OPS)...

Mantle had 14 home runs, fourth most, tied with Aaron and Pujols.  Mays leads with 19...

Mays and Aaron seem to have held their own in OPS.  It's astonishing how many opportunities some players had...

Percent of career ... in plate appearances (PA) in extra innings ...
Mays 2.74%
Aaron 2.25%

Mantle 1.63%

Saturday, October 5, 2013  Hitting in extra innings since 1948: part 2.

19 batters hit at least ten home runs in extra innings...   home runs per at bat:

Albert Pujols has the best rate (7.93), Mantle second (8.64).

Note: Discrepancy in baseball-reference.com: home run log for Mays shows 22 in extra innings while his career splits show 19:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/event_hr.cgi?id=mayswi01&t=b

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=mayswi01&year=Career&t=b

Example: Mays hit 4 extra inning homers in 1955 but his splits only credit him with two apparently for lack of play-by-play data for some games. My personal Mickey Mantle database, derived from baseball-reference.com, has one more PA because I had resolved some of Mantle's missing play-by-play data.  A while ago I had sent that data to baseball-reference.com but never heard back so I'm guessing that has not been incorporated.

OPS: On Base plus Slugging averages.

Willie Mays (342) was second to Pete Rose (367) in PA.  Mays took 284 at bats (AB) to hit his 19 home runs (HR); rate: 14.95.  Mantle 121 AB for his 14 HR.

Hank Aaron (314) was 6th in PA; 249 AB, 14 HR.  Rate: 17.19.

Mantle had a shorter career than Mays or Aaron but his percent of PA in extra innings is much lower.  Possible reasons:
- Yanks were either very good or very bad and played fewer extra innings
- Mantle was pulled and did not finish as many games.

The classic pull for his caddy, Jack Reed:

Sunday, June 24, 1962, 1:31PM, Tiger Stadium
Attendance: 35,368, Time of Game: 7:00
Yankees 9, Tigers 7    22 innings

Five Yankees batted 11 times, including Yogi Berra who caught all 22 innings.

Mantle started in RF so he was probably already hurt.  Mantle had a single in 3 AB, one run, 2 RBI one BB.  Mantle led off the 7th by fouling out to the catcher.  In the bottom of the 7th Joe Pepitone replaced him in RF, batting twice: BB, SO.  Phil Linz PH for Pepitone in the 13th: IW.  Then Reed replaced Linz and played RF, batting FOUR times: 1 for 4.  Reed hit his only career homer off Phil Regan: 22nd inning, 1 on, 1 out to LF.  Jim Bouton shut out Detroit in the final seven innings for the win.

Ironically they all pinch hit about the same number of PA, although I don't know how many of those were in extra innings.  Mantle's would have been a higher percent of his career PA.
Mays 129: OPS .864
Mantle 124; OPS .805
Aaron 121; OPS .699

There's the concept of regression towards the mean, which helps explain the differences between Mantle and these other two great hitters from his era.  Mays and Aaron basically hit about the same in extra innings as they hit all the time while Mantle hit 34% better.  Mantle had fewer than half as many PA as Mays and way fewer AB.

But then there's this: how they hit in innings 7,8,9.

Mantle's OPS for innings:
1,2,3: .946
4,5,6: .958
7,8,9: 1.019
extra: 1.315

Mays's OPS for innings:
1,2,3: .940
4,5,6: .916
7,8,9: .962
extra: .968

Aaron's OPS for innings:
1,2,3: .895
4,5,6: .925
7,8,9: .962
extra: .990

Mantle and Aaron both seem to heat up as the game progresses.

In case you thought Mantle simply walked more here are their slugging averages (SLG) in extra innings:
Mantle: .793
Mays: 563
Aaron: .550

From 1952 through 1963 Mantle's extra inning OPS dropped below 1.000 only twice: 1958 and 1962.  In 1959 Mantle hit three HR in what was generally an off season.
