Oops. They call it gaming, not gambling.
Commissioner Manfred OKs gaming/gambling. First Commissioner Landis turning over in his grave. Sunday, December 2, 2018
But the real point is whether people who make their living from Major League Baseball (MLB) try to make money by participating in the various gaming/gambling enterprises. Until recently that meant nonsense like Draftkings. But now it could be the real deal: Las Vegas professional GAMBLING. The commissioner can call it gaming all he wants but common sense tells us it's gambling. You know, the activity that got eight men out in the 1919 World Series betting scandal and 70 years later former Reds manager Pete Rose banned for life.
Let's get to the bottom line: are baseball players and umpires allowed to bet on baseball games, including those games in which they participate? And if they can, the commissioner's repeating the word integrity will ring hollow the more he repeats it.
Stimulating, provocative, sometimes whimsical new concepts that challenge traditional baseball orthodoxy. Note: Anonymous comments will not be published. Copyright Kenneth Matinale
