Yankees traded Wells for Clemens in 1999. Why?

David Wells February 18, 1999: Traded by the New York Yankees with Homer Bush and Graeme Lloyd to the Toronto Blue Jays for Roger Clemens.

Not even up. Wells plus Bush and Lloyd.

Wells:
Bats: Left  •  Throws: Left
6-3

Clemens:
Bats: Right  •  Throws: Right
6-4

Wells was younger and lefty, which was better in Yankee Stadium.

baseball-reference.com uses June 30 as the cutoff for showing player ages for a season, so both are shown as 36 in 1999, the first season after the trade but Clemens was almost ten months older than Wells.

Clemens pitched for the Yankees 1999-2003, then left for Houston. He pitched again for the Yankees in his final season 2007 at ages 44-45: June 9, 2007 through September 16, 2007 (won in Boston).

Wells pitched for Toronto 1999-2000, then White Sox in 2001, then back to the Yankees 2002-2003. Wells:

January 14, 2001: Traded by the Toronto Blue Jays with Matt DeWitt to the Chicago White Sox for Mike Williams (minors), Kevin BeirneBrian Simmons and Mike Sirotka.
November 5, 2001: Granted Free Agency.
January 17, 2002: Signed as a Free Agent with the New York Yankees.
November 2, 2003: Granted Free Agency.

So Wells and Clemens were Yankee teammates 2002-2003. Let's compare them 1999-2003.

Both could be a pain in the neck, maybe Wells more than Clemens. Clemens was the bigger name and owner George Steinbrenner wanted the bigger name. Brian Cashman was starting his second year as Yankee general manager but Cashman was little more than a clerk in big transactions. George Steinbrenner made the big decisions.

But the Yankees could have done about as well on the field with Wells in those first two seasons that Clemens pitched for the Yankees, 1999-2000, and maybe for all five seasons. The Yankees won the World Series both seasons against Braves and Mets, then just pennants in 2001 and 2003, losing the World Series to expansion teams Arizona and Florida.

Post season with the Yankees:
Wells before being traded for Clemens:
1997: one start: 1-0
1998: four starts: 4-0; ALCS MVP

2002: one start: 0-1
2003: four starts: 2-1

Clemens:
1999: three starts; 2-1; against Boston: 2 IP, 5 ER
2000: four starts: 2-2; 0-2 round one, 8.18 ERA
2001: five starts; 1-1
2002: one start: 5.66 IP, 4 ER
2003: four starts: 2-0

Which of the two is welcomed by Yankee fans in 2019?
