The Dodgers and Giants finished in a tie and then played three extra regular season games.  Don Newcombe pitched into the 9th inning with a 4-1 lead in the final game and was relieved by Ralph Branca with one out, one run in and runners on second and third.  The batter was Bobby Thomson who had homered off Branca a few days earlier.  Rookie Willie Mays, in a big slump, was on deck.  The Dodgers decided to pitch to Thomson rather than load the bases and pitch to Mays.  Thomson hit a home run to win the pennant.

To his credit Branca never complained after he learned that the Giants had been stealing signs from center field in the Polo Grounds, their home park.  Thomson claimed he could not remember if he got the sign on the homer.  Backup Giant catcher Sal Yvars told me about 12 years ago that the Giants did not try to steal the signs from the Yankees in the World Series because there were too many people watching.  The Yankees won the WS 4-2, their third consecutive.

Campanella and Berra both won their first of three MVP awards in five years.  27 year old Gil Hodges became the first Dodger to hit 40 homers and he was 1951 city home run champ.  Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays were rookies.

Sal Maglie and Larry Jansen won 23 games for the Giants.  For the Dodgers Preacher Roe won 22 and Don Newcombe 20.  Whitey Ford was in the Army but Vic Raschi and Eddie Lopat each won 21 for the Yankees.  Lopat was the only Yankee player to make all city in 1951.
