20 year old Mickey Mantle emerged as a star with a whopping OPS+ 162 and displaced 25 year old Duke Snider after Snider made all city for the first time in 1951.  Willie Mays played 34 games, then left for the U.S. Army.  Mays returned in 1954 with spectacular results.  Don Newcombe, best Dodger starting pitcher, was also off to the Army.  Berra replaced Campanella as all city catcher.  Dark again beat Rizzuto and Reese.  The Yankees had new starting infielders: Billy Martin 2B, Gil McDougald 3B.

Leo Durocher again substantially exceeded his Pyth, this time by 6 games.  In 1951 it was 5 but that was with sign stealing, which supposedly had stopped.  Chuck Dressen overcame the 1951 collapse and won the pennant but Casey Stengel led the Yankees to their fourth consecutive World Series championship.  The Yanks won games 6 and 7 in Ebbets Field led my Mantle.

Only 30,037 fans showed up to see the Dodgers try to close out the WS in game 6.  Note the attendance for all the games.  Fewer fans at games 6 and 7 than at games 1 and 2.  All were weekdays.

1 - 34,861 Wednesday, October 1, 1952 Ebbets Field
2 - 33,792 Thursday, October 2, 1952 Ebbets Field
3 - 66,698 Friday, October 3, 1952 Yankee Stadium
4 - 71,787 Saturday, October 4, 1952 Yankee Stadium
5 - 70,536 Sunday, October 5, 1952 Yankee Stadium
6 - 30,037 Monday, October 6, 1952 Ebbets Field
7 - 33,195 Tuesday, October 7, 1952 Ebbets Field

The Yankees continued to dominate regular season attendance, although the Dodgers and Giants finished first and second in NL attendance.

Hoyt Wilhelm pitched 159 innings for the Giants with no starts: 15-3; Sal Maglie: 18-8.  Carl Erskine, Billy Loes and Preacher Roe led the Dodger starters.  For the Yankees Allie Reynolds had his career year (20-8, ERA+ 161) followed by Eddie Lopat, Vic Raschi and Tom Morgan.
