Most Home Runs against righty pitchers. A-Rod could break career record in 2016.

Hank Aaron hit 755 Home Runs (HR). However, baseball-reference.com does not have details on 15 of those HR. Aaron's splits against right/lefty pitchers: 523/217, which adds up to only 740.

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/A/Jaaroh1010.htm

Shows complete splits for Aaron: 534 against righties, 221 against lefties.

50 home runs righty/lefty splits. Sunday, March 6, 2016

baseball-reference.com is the source but it does not have complete splits before about 1956. Therefore, the data for some is incomplete, including: Babe RuthHack WilsonJimmie FoxxHank GreenbergRalph Kiner and Johnny Mize, so those players are omitted. Ruth and Mize batted left handed. Data for Willie Mays in 1955 is incomplete; Mays hit 51 home runs (HR) in 1955. His 1965 52 HR season is included...

Righty batters have hit 50 HR much more often. Only two lefties have hit 50 more than once...

Bat Left, Pitch Right: ...

Barry Bonds: most HR (56), HRtot (73) highest BA, OBP, SLG, OPS ...

Bat Right, Pitch Right: ...

Mark McGwire 1998: 55 HR against righties, 70, highest OBP, SLG, OPS

Sammy Sosa 54, 51 against righties.

Cecil Fielder fewest HR, only 26; lowest BA, OBP, SLG, OPS

OK, let's pause. Obviously there is plenty of cool stuff in yesterday's post but some of it deserved more emphasis. That's the purpose of this post. Specifically, the number of HR hit off righty pitchers.

Lefty batter Barry Bonds hit the most in a season: 56. That's 56 of his record 73. See a lot of righty/lefty detail for seasons of at least 50 HR in the previous post. Bonds hit 535 of his 762 career HR against righties. That's one more than the 534 credited to Aaron by retrosheet.org

Remember, we do not have complete splits for Babe Ruth, who also batted lefty. retrosheet.org: 400 against righties, 149 against lefties. That's only 549 of Ruth's 714 HR.

I quoted the baseball-reference.com search criteria for the results above because it does not include the 523 that it credits to Aaron unless you check an obscure box to permit incomplete results. Mays is also missing for the same reason; Mays 451 against righties and 209 against lefties for his total of 660. That data is in both:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/M/Jmaysw1010.htm

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/event_hr.cgi?id=mayswi01&t=b

The second link is for the HR log of Mays. It took a while and advice from a couple of friends to finally get that. The search criteria used and specified by baseball-reference.com does not indicate whether the results are complete or incomplete. It should.

Bonds appears to have the record for most HR against righties at 535, with Aaron one behind. However, A-Rod is only 17 behind Bonds and could pass him in 2016. Something to watch.

Back to HR off righties in a season.

I find McGwire and Sosa hitting over 50 against righties astonishing. Yeah, I know, they and Bonds and A-Rod used PED, including steroids.

Some astonishing stuff here, too. Again baseball-reference.com does not have complete splits for Ruth, Gehrig, and others, so its ad hoc query function produces incomplete results. This L/R list
is shorter than the R/R list and contains switch hitters Mantle and Berkman (twice). Berkman threw lefty and should have just batted lefty, his natural side. Note that in 1957 Snider hit ALL 40 HR against righties.

Note:
http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1927/Jruthb1010141927.htm

Ruth 1927: 41/19 for his 60 HR season. But I'm not checking Ruth and others year by year. The discrepancies between baseball-reference.com and retrosheet.org need to be resolved.
