How unusual is it for teammates to win those awards in the same season? Let's look at that and, although it's subjective, I'll try to use the MVP and Cy Young awards to help pick the best hitter and pitcher, except when a pitcher wins both awards and when the MVP is not the best hitter.
Glancing at the Baseball Reference list for MVP Awards & Cy Young Awards Winners, I noticed:
2006 Justin Morneau - Johan Santana Minnesota
2002 Miguel Tejada Barry - Zito Oakland
1991 Terry Pendleton - Tom Glavine Atlanta
1990 Barry Bonds - Doug Drabek Pittsburgh; Rickey Henderson - Bob Welch Oakland
1988 Kirk Gibson - Orel Hershiser Los Angeles
1980 Mike Schmidt - Steve Carlton Philadelphia
1974 Steve Garvey - Mike Marshall Los Angeles
1967 Carl Yastrzemski - Jim Lonborg Boston
1956 to 1966 only one CY award
1962 Maury Wills - Don Drysdale Los Angeles
1961 Roger Maris - Whitey Ford Yankees
1960 Dick Groat - Vern Law Pittsburgh
1959 Nellie Fox - Early Wynn Chicago White Sox; Ernie Banks NL MVP for Chicago Cubs
1957 Hank Aaron - Warren Spahn Milwaukee Braves
More than I had expected. Remember, I'm looking for the best hitter and pitcher. From 1957 through 2011 I would pick these as good possibilities:
1990 Barry Bonds - Doug Drabek Pittsburgh
1980 Mike Schmidt - Steve Carlton Philadelphia
1967 Carl Yastrzemski - Jim Lonborg Boston
1961 Mickey Mantle (second to Maris for MVP) - Whitey Ford Yankees
1957 Hank Aaron - Warren Spahn Milwaukee Braves
How about some possible combinations in previous seasons:
1954 Willie Mays - Johnny Antonelli Giants
1934 Lou Gehrig - Lefty Gomez Yankees; both had triple crown
*** The End ***
