Payroll discrepancies in the finals 2003-2013:
NYY | $152,749,814 |
Dif %: (winner's payroll -loser's payroll) / winner's payroll.
Dif $: higher payroll / lower payroll; for each dollar spent by the team with the lower payroll, the other team spent the amount shown, which is essentially a ratio.
The Yankees in 2003 had the biggest payroll advantage, a whopping 209% and outspending 3 to 1, but still lost to Florida in six games. In these eleven seasons the only other teams with a payroll advantage to lose were:
- Detroit 11.7% in 2012
- Houston 2.1% in 2005.
Eight of the eleven winners had the payroll advantage.
Boston's payroll advantage in its three wins: 33.75%, 62.22%, 36.73%. The Red Sox outspent its finals opponents by these ratios: 1.5, 2.7, 1.6. The Red Sox should not be casting any stones at big spenders, evil or otherwise. That 62%/2.7 edge over Colorado in 2007 was second only to the Yankees huge advantage in 2003.
Finally, here are the averages for each team for 2003-2013:
The Yankees averaged the most wins (96) but paid by far the most for each in player salary. Boston was second in both wins (91) and salary per win. St. Louis was third in wins (90) but only twelfth in salary per win. Tampa averaged only 80 wins but paid the least in salary per win.
