Worst lefty batters against lefty pitchers 1948-2013.

Ozzie Guillen.  At least he has the lowest OPS for the years studied, 2013 back through about 1948, which is the earliest time for pretty much full play-by-play data.  Not included: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb.  A minimum of 1,500 plate appearances (PA) was used to include Roger Maris, whose criticism by a fellow Yankee fan prompted this study.  Maris has the 43rd worst OPS among the 137 batters who qualified.  They include Stan Musial who had enough PA but exclude Ted Williams.

About midway of the 137 batters sorted ascending by OPS against lefty pitchers:

RkPlayerOPSOPStotOPSdifOPS%dif
67Ryan Howard0.7280.906-0.178-19.65%
68Kirk Gibson0.7310.815-0.084-10.31%
69Steve Kemp0.7310.797-0.066-8.28%

So .730 OPS against lefties is about the middle.  Since Ozzie had an overall OPS well below there's no sense beating him up.  The five lowest OPS:

4Willie Davis0.6190.723-0.104-14.38%
5Jorge Orta0.6220.746-0.124-16.62%

113Ichiro Suzuki0.7840.7750.0091.16%

Suzuki had both the best and only positive OPSdif and OPS%dif.

Tuesday, March 26, 2013  Ichiro Suzuki: only lefty hitter with higher BA against lefty pitchers.

Only 24 of the 137 lefty batters had higher OPS against lefty pitchers than Suzuki .  Highest OPS:

137Barry Bonds0.9861.051-0.065-6.18%

Bonds also had the most home runs (HR): 227.  Babe Ruth splits are not complete but Ruth probably had fewer HR against lefties.

Biggest OPSdif:

Oh, Roger Maris:

Maybe Maris wasn't so bad.  Check the complete list.  Click this link to view details.  There are some surprises, including batters who had the highest batting average multiple times and a triple crown winner.
