Apocalypse Now: Metsies beating Cubbies in battle of Cutesies.

Is the Earth still on its axis?

Cubbies v. Metsies is not Chicago v. New York. More like Little League. Friday, October 16, 2015

Metsies is a derogatory term that is mine and which I got from Mets origins.  After the Yankees lost the 1960 World Series to the Pittsburgh Pirates the Yankee owners fired general manage George Weiss and field manager Casey Stengel, both of whom wound up in those same jobs with the expansion Mets who started play in 1962.  Stengel was a media creature and one of his self created Met promotions was to insist that even babies were now Met fans.  Instead of their childish first words being Ma Ma or Pa Pa, Stengel assured us that those words were Metsie, Metsie, Metsie.  And so whenever I feel animosity towards this odd New York entity I think of them as Metsies.

Einstein did not live long enough to see the Mets.

Metsie, Metsie. Monday, October 19, 2015 12:37 AM (Video of Stengel's pronouncement)

Metsies took a 2-0 lead in the best of seven semifinal series, winning both at home.  Metsies are led by a 30 year old guy who becomes a free agent after the tournament and the Mets probably have no intention of signing Daniel Murphy, even though he's hitting like Lou Gehrig.  Well not really.  Murphy: OPS 1.308.  Gehrig:

Gehrig in 150 WS PA: 1.214 OPS

Gehrig had OPS:
2.433 in 1928 against the Cardinals
1.718 in 1932 against the Cubs who had not yet descended into the Cubbies

OK, only OPS .661 against the Cubs in 1938 but by then Gehrig was, you know, dying.

So has Daniel Murphy made a Joe Hardy deal with the devil as happens in that Communist play "Damn Yankees"?  We may never know.  But what the heck is going on?  Even Cubbies cuteness is no match for these mesmerizing Metsies, who in this 2015 tournament against the three leading candidates to be voted the 2015 National Conference Cy Young award:

Dodger Clayton Kershaw 1-1, 2.63 ERA
Dodger Zack Greinke 1-1, 3.29 ERA
Cubbie Jake Arrieta 1-0, 7.20 ERA; first three Metsies scored last night on Murphy homer

Metsies management is so far winning at Russian Roulette in pushing their starting pitchers beyond previous limits.

God may not play dice but the Almighty may be getting special odds on Daniel Murphy at Draftkings and Fanduel.  Unless it's that opposite power at work.
