Matt Holliday - born: January 15, 1980 in Stillwater, OK (Age 36 years, 325 days). You can't make up stuff like this. Brian Cashman has been the Yankee general manager since 1998. Championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009. Cashman deserves almost no credit for the first, then a bit more for each of the next two. Cashman gets full credit for the fourth and final Yankee championship.
But Cashman took a championship team and turned the Yankees into just another team. Yankee finishes since 2010: 2,1,1,3,2,2,4. In the last four seasons manager Joe Girardi has taken a sub .500 team and masqueraded it as borderline capable of qualifying for the tournament. Hal Steinbrenner, the media and most fans bought it.
2001-2016: one championship. ONE. That could be any team. It could be the Kansas City Royals. It could be the Phillies. It could be the White Sox, Marlins, Angels, Diamondbacks. They all won one championship since 2001, the Marlins and Diamondbacks over the Yankees in the finals.
I've been ripping Cashman since 2013. Now Fangraphs is getting after Cashman.
Yankees’ Struggles Aren’t Fault of CBA
by Craig Edwards - December 2, 2016 fangraphs.com
... New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman in a piece from George King III of the New York Post...
... poor spending and failed player development have been the team’s main issues...
New York has received about as much production over the past five years from players age 27 or younger as Mike Trout creates in one season ...
... Yankees ... have long relied on veterans, but it’s worse than it has been a long while ...
The rest of baseball has gotten better results by giving more time to young players, while the Yankees have gone the opposite direction...
... the Yankees spent several offseasons preparing to go under the cap in 2014 in an effort to save themselves millions of dollars — only to then blow apart that plan after an unsuccessful season, signing Carlos Beltran, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Masahiro Tanaka.
As for staying out of free agency this past season, that was much less the product of a competitive-balance tax and much more the product of having committed $75 million to the aforementioned five players last year — along with the ill-advised Alex Rodriguez extension that stretched the club’s budget thin...
The Yankees have hit on a couple pitchers in the draft, but their lack of development when it comes to young players — and their failed/abandoned attempt to get under the competitive-balance tax — has been what’s cost them, not the CBA.
