You can't make this up.

Yankees’ Pursuit of Moncada and Sale Reflects New Restraint
By BILLY WITZDEC. 6, 2016 nytimes.com

Yoan Moncada, a prized Cuban prospect, worked out privately for the Yankees at their complex in Tampa, Fla., in January 2015 ...

(for) contingent of scouts, coaches and executives — which included Hal Steinbrenner, the team’s principal owner ...

But the Yankees drew a line with their bidding... the Yankees did not budge....

Moncada signed with the Boston Red Sox, who spent $63 million on him ...

... the Yankees had allowed themselves to be outbid ...

Moncada established himself as Baseball America’s top prospect. On Tuesday, the Yankees’ reluctance to acquire him came with more immediate consequences when the Red Sox, the Yankees’ perennial archrival, used Moncada as the primary chip in a deal to land the ace Chris Sale from the Chicago White Sox.

“That’s a big one,” Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said shortly after the Red Sox’ trade of Moncada and three other prospects was made official. “That’s a blockbuster. That’s a wow. Boston’s like the Golden State Warriors now in baseball. They’ve got their Durant and Green and Thompson and Curry.”

Asked who the Yankees have become, Cashman shrugged...

The Yankees largely sat out the nonwaiver trade deadline during the 2015 season and watched as their seven-game lead in the American League East disappeared. They were the only team that did not sign a free agent last winter...

Sale’s contract was almost as attractive as his résumé: three years and $39.5 million remain...

... for Sale, Cashman said he did not want to give up a large haul of prospects unless he thought the Yankees were championship contenders...

Cashman said Tuesday that he had no regrets about not pursuing Sale. He said the same thing about not offering more for Moncada.

Brian Cashman strikes out on Gleyber Torres in 2013, then trades Aroldis Chapman to make up for that failure. Tuesday, July 26, 2016

... the Cubs outbid the Yankees by offering $1.7 million (for Gleyber Torres) ...

The Yankees couldn't afford that or was Cashman too inept yet again? Either way, it's another failure by Cashman.

Had Cashman already signed Torres, then he could have traded Aroldis Chapman for other "assets"
