Righty/Lefty 1950-2024 OPS splits for batters. Saturday, April 5, 2025
OPS: On base percent (average) Plus Slugging average.
PA: AB + BB + HBP + SF + SH
OBP: (H + BB + HBP)/(At Bats + BB + HBP + SF)
SLG: Total Bases/At Bats or
(1B + 2*2B + 3*3B + 4*HR)/AB
OPS is a pretty good evaluation of batters. OPS+ (weighted for year and ballparks) is better but it's not available for these righty/lefty splits.
SF: sacrifice flies (fly ball out RBI) not used in the first four seasons here: 1950-1953. For instance, Mickey Mantle has 12 AB that after 1953 would not have been charged At Bats (AB) but would have been credited as SF. It may be the dumbest scoring rule of any consequence and should be removed, including adjusting past stats.

A table was created that contained a record for each of the 75 MLB seasons 1950-2024. It contains the minimum PA for each season for (vs RHP) and (vs LHP). That number is based on MLB splits each season for the number of outs credited to the pitchers. Using that, 892 records were selected as eligible from the 1102 found in the two queries in stathead.com.
It was based on a total of 500 PA. If the percent of outs credited to LHP was 30%, then the minimum PA (vs LHP) for batters is 150 for that season and 70% (350) for (vs RHP). Here are the first ten seasons:

The other 7 are righty batters (vs LHP).

That Dick Allen 1966 split is crazy. His split OPS+ was 293!
