Barf: Brian Cashman executive of the year for Baseball America. I'd have fired him.

I'm the lone wolf on this. But I think I'm correct.

2017 MLB Executive Of The Year: Yankees GM Brian Cashman November 28, 2017 By George King

It doesn't state who selected Cashman, nor whether anyone else was even considered. No matter. It would be the herd gathering.

Rather than list links to my many critiques of Cashman in recent years, I'll just sum it up.

1. In 20 years as general manager (GM) of the Yankees Cashman has spent more money on player salaries than any other GM. My guess is that his wins per dollar are not the best.

2. Cashman became GM in February 1998, so no reasonable person would give Cashman credit for that championship. The Yankees then also won in 1999 and 2000. Cashman deserves increasing, but not full credit, for those two. The championship for which Cashman gets full credit is 2009. But even there, the team relied on players inherited by Cashman, including:
Derek Jeter
Jorge Posada
Andy Pettitte
Mariano Rivera.

3. Since 2000, Cashman's championship record is one for 17.

4. Cashman is getting credit for starting to clean up his own mess.

5. Following the 2014 season Cashman failed to sign free agent pitcher Max Scherzer. Scherzer won NL Cy Young award the last two seasons for Washington.

6. Cashman failed to trade for Josh Donaldson when the Yankees were looking for a third baseman. The very next season Donaldson was AL MVP. Instead Cashman signed Chase Headley for four years at $13 million per year.

7. Cashman failed to trade for pitcher Chris Sale, maybe because the Yankees did not have the big prospect the White Sox were looking for.

8. Cashman TWICE let go lefty starter Jose Quintana, who then threw 1,055 innings for the White Sox over six seasons with ERA+ 115. Quintana never pitched an inning for the Yankees.

9. Cashman drafted Aaron Judge as the Yankees SECOND pick. Cashman drafted a guy with the first pick who has yet to play in the majors. Cashman drafted Judge FIVE picks later. It was DUMB luck that Judge was still available.

10. Mark Teixeira is the most recent big bopper free agent Cashman signed: 2009. Last off season Cashman did not sign Edwin Encarnacion. This off season Cashman intends to not sign J.D. Martinez.

11. Field manager Joe Girardi saved Cashman's job by getting a teams to win much more than expected according to Pythagorean W-L:
2013: actual (85 wins), Pythag (79 wins)
2014: actual (84 wins), Pythag (77 wins).

After Girardi got the Yankees within one game of the 2017 World Series, Cashman did not offer Girardi a new contract and is still searching for his successor.

Considering the amount of money spent, Cashman is mediocre. Definitely, not executive material. Twenty years in the same job is way too long.
