The 1950s pejorative was: rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for U.S. Steel.
Is it now like rooting for Google/Apple/Microsoft (take your pick)?
According to Yankee announcer Micheal Kay, owner Hal Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman considered replacing field manager Joe Girardi for a few years.
Note: Girardi only had a three year contract.
Then today Micheal Kay stated that Cashman said he, Cashman, is looking for someone like Joe Girardi. There are two conclusions, which are not mutually exclusive.
1. Steinbrenner and Cashman do not value the position of field manager highly enough to pay $4 million per year. An "unknown" manager would probably get no more than half a million. That whatever failures there have been in recent seasons, those failures are the fault of the field manager, not Steinbrenner and Cashman.
2. Steinbrenner and Cashman want Joe Girardi but without the blood, sweat and tears. An algorithm implementing analytics from on high.
Since Cashman is neither a former baseball player nor a statistician, one wonders what he contributes other than having survived the Steinbrenner family for 20 years as general manager.
Neither Steinbrenner nor Cashman want to actually go down into the dugout and associate with all those sweaty ball players. Is there a more bloodless pair in the Major League? They deserve each other. The question is what do Yankee fans deserve?
