50 years today since I last saw Mickey Mantle play in person.

Mickey Mantle pinch hit for shortstop Gene Micheal in the second game of a twinight doubleheader. It was the last time I saw Mickey Mantle play in person. He singled in the 9th inning. The game ended in a 3-3 tie, called at the 1:00 AM American League curfew.

Start Time: 8:03 p.m. Local
Attendance: 33,880
Venue: Yankee Stadium I
Game Duration: 5:04
Night Game, on grass
Second game of doubleheader
Yankees 3, Tigers 3    19 innings

Neither team scored after the 8th inning. Detroit won the 1968 AL pennant and then the World Series but the Yankees swept the Tigers four games that weekend. The Yankees finished strong and got over .500: 83-79. The tie game led to another doubleheader two days later with these same Tigers with 1959 AL home run champ Rocky Colavito pitching in relief for the Yankees in game one and being the winning pitcher.

Game one of the August 23 twinight doubleheader was won by the Yankees 2-1. It's the last game I saw Mickey Mantle in person as a starting player. He was 0 for 3 plus a walk. He played first base as he did in his last two seasons. Here is the starting lineup:

1968 AL Rookie of the Year Stan Bahnsen pitched a complete game victory. With that win the Yankees were 60-63. As mentioned above the Yankees would finish 83-79.

24 Yankee doubleheaders in 1968. Monday, June 4, 2018

Note that from Friday August 23 through Friday August 30 the Yankees played five doubleheaders in eight days, including three on consecutive days, with no days off: 13 games.
