"This is most unusual." - Mel Allen on Roger Maris being called from the dugout in Yankee Stadium after tying the season home run record of Babe Ruth. Maris reluctantly took a curtain call.

Both Ruth and Maris hit about 3 of 4 home runs against starting pitchers. Against starters Ruth did best the first time he faced them. Maris did best the second time he faced the starter, 51% of the homers he hit off starters.

Against relief pitchers Ruth did best the second time he faced them: half his homers off relievers. Maris did best the first time he faced relievers: 69%. This is the reverse of how they did against starting pitchers. Both did their worst the third time against relief pitchers.

Ruth batted third in all of his 1927 plate appearances (PA). Lou Gehrig batted fourth in every game and Gehrig played every game.

Maris batted third most of the time (87%) in 1961: 610 of 698 PA. Mickey Mantle batted fourth in every game Mantle started, all but 3 PA when he PH. However, waiting on deck for these Maris home runs:
60 Hector Lopez, who had replaced Mantle; happy 90th birthday, Hector!
61 Yogi Berra.
