Discrepancies in Times Facing Opponent in Game.

Home Runs Times Facing Opponent: part 2. Tuesday, July 9, 2019

Continuation of previous post:

Home Runs Times Facing Opponent: Ruth, Maris, Bonds, ... Monday, July 8, 2019

Times Facing Opponent in Game for season home run record holders Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa (held record during 1998), Barry Bonds ... and Joe DiMaggio...

DiMaggio was included with the record breakers because of the very high percent of his home runs hit against starting pitchers facing them the third and fourth time in a game.

baseball-reference.com shows vs. ?P for 23 of DiMaggio's 1937 at bats (AB) that are not classified in these starting/relief pitcher categories. However, he hit no home runs in those 23 AB. His total AB were 621, not 598. But there is a further discrepancy: DiMaggio's starting/relief AB add up to 579, not even 598, for a discrepancy of 42 AB.

Ruth (16) and Maris (11) also have the discrepancies shown in the table above but there is no indication of that in the original tables in baseball-reference.com as there is for DiMaggio.

The next two tables below use the AB details and incorrect totals, which have discrepancies for Ruth, Maris and DiMaggio.

Further checking on DiMaggio shows that for his career his "Times Facing Opponent in Game" numbers are off:
AB 5.18%
HR 7.20%

1941 is the only one of DiMaggio's 13 seasons for which baseball-reference.com does not show any discrepancy in this data. Click this link to view details of all 13 seasons and career totals with enhancements.

Unfortunately, the summary data for simply starting pitcher (SP) versus relief pitcher (RP) shows the sum of the detailed records for each without explicitly stating that. Those numbers are probably known even it's not known the number of times that the batter has faced a pitcher in a particular game.

DiMaggio's HR are off in 8 seasons and three of those by 5 HR:
1936 17.24%: 5/29
1946 20%: 5/25
1950 15.63%: 5/32

A future post may match DiMaggio's PA to his HR log, maybe for 1950. His first 1950 home run is in a game in which DiMaggio batted five times: twice against the starter and once against each of three relief pitchers. He homered in PA 4 against relief pitcher Mickey Harris. (vs. RP, 1st) That's obvious by casual observation.
