Larsen threw 97 pitches. It was the first perfect game since 1922:
Charlie Robertson Sunday, April 30, 1922 White Sox 2, Tigers 0.

Note: Robertson enters at about the three minute mark (3:00) so you may have to slide the control to that point. The mystery guest is in the image for that show.
What's My Line? - Oct 14, 1956: Charlie Robertson, age 60, is the first guest on the CBS TV show (1950-1967). It's six days after Don Larsen's perfect game. A panel of "celebrities" tries to guess the identity of each guest who signs in at a blackboard. Robertson signs in as C.C. Robertson.
The first panelist asked, Bennett Cerf, guesses Robertson's secret immediately. Moderator mentions that Robertson pitched to Ty Cobb in that game and Cerf adds "and Heillmann and Veach".
Then anticlimactically, the panel must guess the current occupation of Charlie Robertson. Right, who cares?
Robertson was a 26 year old rookie making only his fourth appearance of the season and third consecutive start pitched a perfect game against Detroit. He had pitched in one game, a start, in 1919: two innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, both earned.
So his perfect game came in career game number five. And unlike Sandy Koufax 9/9/1965, there were not two opposing batters (Young and Browne) making their career debuts. Detroit starting lineup 4/30/1922:
1 | Lu Blue | 1B |
2 | George Cutshaw | 2B |
3 | Ty Cobb | CF |
4 | Bobby Veach | LF |
5 | Harry Heilmann | RF |
6 | Bob Jones | 3B |
7 | Topper Rigney | SS |
8 | Clyde Manion | C |
9 | Herman Pillette |
