Future Hall of Fame pitcher Early Wynn allowed seven runs in the first inning, including:
HR: Tommy Henrich (1, off Early Wynn, 1st inn, 1 on, 0 outs to LF-CF); Allie Reynolds (1, off Early Wynn, 1st inn, 2 on, 2 outs to LF).
Henrich was the number two hitter, so Wynn was down 2-0 quickly.
Allie Reynolds was the starting pitcher for the Yankees. Wynn must have been humiliated.
Using the pitch count estimator Early Wynn threw about 148 pitches.
After a long playing career (1930-1947) with the Washington Senators and Chicago White Sox Joe Kuhel returned to manage the Senators in the very next season. Here's his entire MLB managing record:

After a bad first season, Kuhel had an even worse record in his second.
Early Wynn slipped:
1947: 17-15, 3.64 ERA (102 ERA+), 247 innings
1948: 9-17, 5.82 ERA (74 ERA+), 198 Innings, led AL in ER: 128
December 14, 1948: Traded by the Washington Senators with Mickey Vernon to the Cleveland Indians for Joe Haynes, Ed Klieman and Eddie Robinson.
December 4, 1957: Traded by the Cleveland Indians with Al Smith to the Chicago White Sox for Fred Hatfield and Minnie Minoso.
Remember, the time of that 1948 game was two hours and 17 minutes.

Josh Fleming threw 81 pitches. Early Wynn threw about 148 pitches. Fleming is in his second MLB season with a career total of 123 innings: 14-6, ERA+ 90.
Veteran Rays manager Kevin Cash, who got Tampa into the 2020 World Series, pulled Fleming in the 4th inning after Boston had taken a lead of 10-0. All of Fleming's ten runs scored while he was on the mound. In fact, Fleming left two runners on base but his relief retired the next two batters, stranding both of Flemings's runners.
Current managers don't want their pitchers to absorb too much and remove them accordingly. They also don't want the rest of the team to be too impacted negatively.
Early Wynn won 300 games. In 1959 at age 39 Early Wynn led the White Sox pitchers to the AL pennant and led the AL in:
Wins 22GS: 37
IP: 255
BB: 119
BF: 1076
Early Wynn won the 1959 Cy Young award; 120 ERA+.
