In last night's "Field of Dreams" game in Dryersville, Iowa, the 9th inning pitchers for both teams choked ... big time. Yankee relief pitcher Zack Britton choked in the bottom of the 9th, so he's the bigger choker.
White Sox relief pitcher Liam Hendriks entered in the 9th with a 7-4 lead and allowed two run home runs to Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Yanks lead 8-7.
Enter choker number two Zack Britton:
But as soon as Zack Britton walked the 9 batter and then gave up the game losing home run on the first pitch to the leadoff non-home run hitter SS Tim Anderson, I immediately thought of the self righteous Zack Britton quote about his teammate Domingo German this spring:
Zack Britton on Domingo Germán's return to the Yankees 2/18/21:
"Sometimes, you don't get to control who your teammates are. I don't agree with what he did, I don't think it has any place in the game or off the field at all."

What was the point? To be the umpteenth guy to condemn German? German had already been punished and criticized. He didn't pitch at all in 2020. He returned to the Yankees in 2021 because the Yankees needed him. He was contrite with his teammates. He worked hard in spring training and made the team as a starting pitcher. Then Zack Britton, a one inning relief pitcher, runs his mouth? What the heck?
Well last night, Yankee players and fans should have wondered about Zack Britton being a Yankee. His overall record in 2021?
Zack Britton
Position: Pitcher
Bats: Left • Throws: Left
From June 12 through August 12: 18 appearances, none longer than one inning. ONE inning. In half, Zack Britton allowed at least one run. HALF. How difficult is it for a MLB pitcher to throw ONE shutout inning? ONE.
2021 salaries:
Zack Britton: $13,000,000 That's $13 million.
Domingo German: $577,500 MLB minimum
Zack Britton is being paid almost 26 times as much as his teammate Domingo German. 26.
Domingo Germán
Position: Pitcher
Bats: Right • Throws: Right
And Zack Britton wants to run the guy off the team? Zack Britton doesn't have the standing. Zack Britton didn't say anything about fellow relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman ($17,200,000 in 2018) when Britton became Chapman's Yankee teammate:
Zack Britton: July 24, 2018: Traded by the Baltimore Orioles to the New York Yankees for Cody Carroll, Josh Rogers and Dillon Tate.
Maybe Zack Britton only likes millionaires like himself.
Zack Britton pitched 8 years for the Baltimore Orioles, the first three as a failed starter. Then he became successful ... for the Baltimore Orioles.
Zack Britton should go back to the Baltimore Orioles and the anonymity he so richly deserves (1776).
