In 1922
Ken Williams of the St. Louis Browns (now Baltimore Orioles) led the American League in Home Runs with 39. He has the most HR at home with single digit on the road. That's also the only total less than 40 among the 34 above.
17 times a player has hit at least 30 home runs on the road in a season, half the number of times at home:
Rk | I | Player | Year | HR | AB | AB/HR | HRtot | Home |
1 | | Barry Bonds | 2001 | 36 | 252 | 7.0 | 73 | 37 |
2 | | Babe Ruth | 1927 | 32 | 287 | 9.0 | 60 | 28 |
3 | | David Ortiz | 2006 | 32 | 291 | 9.1 | 54 | 22 |
4 | | Mark McGwire | 1998 | 32 | 246 | 7.7 | 70 | 38 |
5 | | Luis Gonzalez | 2001 | 31 | 308 | 9.9 | 57 | 26 |
6 | | Roger Maris | 1961 | 31 | 310 | 10.0 | 61 | 30 |
7 | | George Foster | 1977 | 31 | 319 | 10.3 | 52 | 21 |
8 | | Brady Anderson | 1996 | 31 | 279 | 9.0 | 50 | 19 |
9 | | Sammy Sosa | 1998 | 31 | 333 | 10.7 | 66 | 35 |
10 | | Shawn Green | 2001 | 30 | 320 | 10.7 | 49 | 19 |
11 | | Jim Gentile | 1961 | 30 | 258 | 8.6 | 46 | 16 |
12 | | Mickey Mantle | 1961 | 30 | 284 | 9.5 | 54 | 24 |
13 | | Jeff Bagwell | 1999 | 30 | 285 | 9.5 | 42 | 12 |
14 | | Sammy Sosa | 2001 | 30 | 296 | 9.9 | 64 | 34 |
15 | | Andruw Jones | 2005 | 30 | 305 | 10.2 | 51 | 21 |
16 | | Sammy Sosa | 1999 | 30 | 317 | 10.6 | 63 | 33 |
17 | | Eddie Mathews | 1953 | 30 | 300 | 10.0 | 47 | 17 |
Jeff Bagwell had the fewest at home and the lowest total. Some surprises in players who did not benefit from their home park as is often assumed:
Babe Ruth: 1927 60 home runs
Roger Maris: 1961 61 home runs
Brady Anderson: 1996; lowest percent at home for at least 50 homers
Sammy Sosa: all three years he hit at least 60 Sosa hit at least 30 both home and road but more on the road all three times.
