1936 openers in same game including Fireman Johnny Murphy of the Yankees.

Two relief pitchers starting the same 1936 game noticed by chance in the previous post on a completely different subject. They were not openers in the current sense, which has become all the rage: having a one inning pitcher pitch in the first inning. These 1936 pitchers were apparently expected to perform like starters and pitch at least 5 innings.

Murphy: 415 games, 40 starts (9.6%)

1936:
Turbeville: 12 games, 6 starts (50%)
Murphy: 27 games, 5 starts (18.5%)

Hall of Fame Yankee manager Joe McCarthy obviously evolved in his use of Murphy as the number of starts trended down 1934-1943: 20, 8, 5, 4, 2, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0.

McCarthy generally did not overwork his Yankee starting pitchers. In 1936 only Red Ruffing and Monte Pearson were among AL leaders in:

McCarthy used only his two best relief pitchers and no "starting" pitchers in that game.

By 1941 27 starts led the Yankees:
