Babe Ruth hit 88% of his team's home runs: Red Sox 1919. Only 2 other Red Sox homered.

Because of World War I baseball teams played fewer than the usual 154 games (22 against 7 opponents) in 1918 and 1919. The 1919 Boston Red Sox were 66-71 (137 games). Their star player, Babe Ruth, had been a full time pitcher his first three full seasons ,1915-1917, then evolved into almost a full time slugger.

In 1919 Ruth broke the modern season record of 24 home runs set by Philadelphia Phillie Gavvy Gravath in 1915. Ruth also broke an old record of 27 set in the 1800s in a home park with a very close fence.

In 1915, the year Cravath hit 24, the Brooklyn team hit the fewest home runs in the National League: 14 by these players:

The first player among those five was elected to the Hall of Fame as a player. The second was elected as a manager. But the point is that even with only 14 team home runs, five players hit them. Those five players had at least 459 at bats (AB).

Here are the home runs hit by the 1919 Red Sox:

The Red Sox team hit 33 home runs, 29 by Babe Ruth. Only two other Red Sox players hit home runs. Shortstop Everett Scott had 507 AB but no home runs. Third baseman Ossie Vitt had 469 AB and no home runs.

Ruth hit 88 percent of his team's home runs: 29/33. That's probably a record.

Only three players homering in a season for a team is a modern record since 1903. See 1908 White Sox below; they also had only three players homer.

The 1918 Red Sox 75-51 (126 games) won the World Series over the Chicago Cubs 4-2. Here are the five Red Sox who hit their 15 regular season home runs:

In 1918 Ruth tied Tillie Walker (PHA) for most home runs in the American League. Ruth hit 73.3% of his team's 1918 home runs. Ruth was also 13-7 in 166 innings pitching. In the 1918 World Series Ruth started and won games one and four: 2 runs in 17 innings; Ruth did not hit or give up any home runs.

Babe Ruth: December 26, 1919: Purchased by the New York Yankees from the Boston Red Sox for $100,000.

Since 1903 teams have hit fewer than 10 home runs 19 times, all between 1903 and 1918:

The 1908 Chicago White Sox (88-64) hit the fewest home runs since 1903: three but ... three players, one a pitcher, hit one each:

Teams with fewer Home Runs than the individual record. Thursday, May 5, 2016

Babe Ruth hit more Home Runs (HR) than every other team in his league in both 1920 and 1927. However, in both seasons Ruth's Yankee teammates hit more HR than Ruth. Ruth set the season HR record four times: 1919 with the Boston Red Sox, then with the Yankees in 1920, 1921, 1927.

Babe Ruth: set HR record and hit 88% of his team's HR! And won nine games pitching. Thursday, December 6, 2012

Babe Ruth set the HR record for the first of four times in 1919, his final season with the Boston Red Sox. Ruth hit 29 HR. But here's the amazing thing. Only two of his teammates hit HR:

Harry Hooper 3, all on the road: Aug. 18 St. Louis, Sept. 6 Phiadelphia game one, Sept. 8 New York game one

Stuffy McInnis 1 - June 23 IPHR in Fenway Park...

Ruth was still pitching, which he all but abandoned the next season when he joined the Yankees.  In 1919 Ruth pitched in 17 games, starting 15: 133 innings, 12 CG, 9 wins, 5 losses...

... Ruth batted fourth in 14 of the 17 games in which he pitched in 1919.
