Clutch stats: incomplete further back in time. Thursday, June 13, 2019

I mentioned to a friend: on MLB Network Harold Reynolds was telling people what a great hitter DJ LeMahieu is. Career OPS+ 94. 2019 is only his second season over 100.

My friend replied: He can actually hit with RISP, which the Yankees have lacked big time in recent years.  Sometimes you need to cut down on your swing and go for a single.

I knew that. And that LeMahieu led MLB in singles so far in 2019. So I looked up his Clutch stats for 2019.

Late & Close are Plate Appearances in the 7th or later with the batting team tied, ahead by one, or the tying run at least on deck.

LeMahieu's OPS varies more than Yankee fans might like but he's doing well in 2019. But how are the career clutch numbers for the Yankees big four? It's not fair to compare LeMahieu to them but what the heck. Let's see.

All four of the Yankees big four had amazing clutch numbers. Ruth and Gehrig had OPS over 1.000 in every category. Lowest for DiMaggio .932 and Mantle .920. And those are career numbers.
