Teammate pairs home runs in same inning and multiple home runs in same game.

The pairs with the most home runs:
Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews 1954-1966: Braves 863
Willie Mays and Willie McCovey 1959-1971: Giants 800
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig 1925-1934: Yankees 771

Teammate pairs with most career home runs as TEAMMATES, not blindly adding up their team totals. Saturday, April 18, 2020

Of the three pairs with the most total home runs, Aaron/Mathews hit the most home runs but also had the most AB and the worst ratio AB/HR. Ruth/Gehrig had the fewest HR and AB but the best ratio.

Review the detailed data in the post above.

Shockingly, among those three pairs, there was only one occurrence of a pair each hitting multiple home runs in the same game:

Tuesday, May 29, 1928
Attendance: 25,000
Venue: Yankee Stadium I
Game Duration: 1:45
Day Game, on grass
Second game of doubleheader, see First game.
Yankees 12, Red Sox 3

HR: Lou Gehrig 2 (10, 1 off Lloyd Brown, 4th inn, 0 on, 0 outs to RF, 1 off Milt Gaston, 3rd inn, 2 on, 0 outs to CF-RF); Babe Ruth 2 (18, 2 off Lloyd Brown, 4th inn, 0 on, 0 outs to RF; 7th inn, 0 on, 2 outs to LF); Earle Combs (4, off Lloyd Brown, 7th inn, 0 on, 1 out to LF-CF).

Not surprisingly, both Ruth and Gehrig homered in the same inning, back to back, since they batted 3 and 4 in the Yankee lineup in 1928. FYI:
Attendance: 19,582
Venue: Fenway Park
Game Duration: 2:56
Day Game, on grass
Yankees 12, Red Sox 3

Same score as the 1928 game.
HR: Mickey Mantle 2 (13, 1 off Gene Conley, 1st inn, 2 on, 1 out to Deep CF-RF, 1 off Mike Fornieles, 8th inn, 0 on, 2 outs to Deep CF-RF); Roger Maris 2 (11, 1 off Gene Conley, 3rd inn, 0 on, 1 out to Deep RF, 1 off Mike Fornieles, 8th inn, 2 on, 2 outs to Deep RF); Bill Skowron 2 (8, 1 off Gene Conley, 4th inn, 0 on, 0 outs to Deep LF Line, 1 off Dave Hillman, 6th inn, 0 on, 0 outs to Deep CF-RF); Yogi Berra (6, off Gene Conley, 6th inn, 0 on, 0 outs to Deep CF-RF).

Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, in their second season as teammates, both homered twice in this game. They also homered back to back in the 8th inning off Mike Fornieles. In 1961 they hit 54 and 61 home runs respectively, 115 total, a record which still stands. Maris broke Ruth's record of 60. In 1960 and 1961 they combined for 194 home runs, which may be a record for a pair of teammates in two consecutive seasons. This may be addressed in a future post.

In 1961 Mantle and Maris hit back to back home runs in the same inning three times in 13 days in July off starting pitchers:
Early Wynn, White Sox in Chicago, 1st inning, Thursday, July 13,1961
Bill Monbouquette, Red Sox in Boston, 1st inning, Friday, July 21,1961
Frank Baumann (lefty) White Sox in Yankee Stadium, 4th inning, Tuesday, July 25,1961, first game of a doubleheader in which Maris hit two home runs in each game; the
4th inning home runs hit the two foul poles: Maris right, Mantle left batting righty against the southpaw.
