After Yankee general manager Brian Cashman squeezed out field manager Joe Girardi Cashman's surprise pick as Girardi's successor was former player Aaron Boone, who had no managing or coaching experience. Boone was an ESPN commentator during some MLB games on television.
Some possible candidates to succeed Boone as Yankee manager:
Alex Rodriguez (Born: July 27, 1975 (Age: 45 and 269 days) in New York, NY): A-Rod has the same announcing experience that Boone had when Boone was hired. Rodriguez had 54% (6,520 of 12,207) of his plate appearances with the Yankees: 2004-2013, 2015. Rodriguez was suspended for 2014 because of performance enhancing drugs (PED). Rodriguez was AL MVP 2003 with Texas, then with the Yankees in 2005 and 2007.
David Cone (Born: January 2, 1963 (Age: 58 and 110 days) in Kansas City, MO): Pitched for the Yankees 1995-2000. Perfect game in 1999. Led AL in wins in 1998: 20. Also pitched for the Mets 1987-1992, 2003; 20-3 (.870) in 1987. Comments during some Yankees television games.
Carlos Mendoza (Born: November 4, 1974 (Age: 46 and 169 days) in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela): 29 MLB plate appearances. Yankee bench coach 2020, 2021. Yankee interim manager in 2021 spring training during Boone's convalescence from a heart procedure.
Carlos Beltran (Born: April 24, 1977 (Age: 43 and 363 days) in Manati, Puerto Rico): played MLB 1998-2017 (Yankees 2014-2016). Tied Met season home run record with 41 in 2006. Finished with Houston, hired to manage the Mets but withdrew because of involvement in the Houston sign stealing scandal. Seemed genuinely contrite. For 2021 Red Sox brought back their cheating manager Alex Cora after one year (2020) away. Why not a second chance for Beltran?
Brian Cashman (Born: July 3, 1967 (Age 53 years), Rockville Centre, NY): Yankee GM since February 1998. One World Series appearance 2002-2020: 2009 championship. Dry spell 2010-2020 longest for the Yankees since before Babe Ruth joined in 1920. But since Cashman wants a yes man, why not give himself instructions. At least there would be one person to blame ... by ownership. The late George Steinbrenner (died July 13, 2010) would have fired Cashman years ago.
Hal Steinbrenner (Born December 3, 1969 (Age 51) Culver, Indiana): Son of George. President Harry Truman said the buck stops here. Hal is Chairman and Managing General Partner of Yankee Global Enterprises, which owns the New York Yankees. Doubtful that Hal has ever given Cashman a performance review. But Hal may be forced to make a decision on both the field and general manager positions. Connie Mack owned and managed the Philadelphia Athletics for half a century, retiring in 1950 ... when Truman was president.
