Jacob deGrom in some perspective. New York Post writer Joel Sherman has been promoting deGrom as one of the greatest pitchers ever. But consider the number of innings pitched by deGrom compared to the innings pitched by these Hall of Famers who are known to have pitched relatively few. For Babe Ruth, only his Red Sox innings are shown. Ruth pitched an additional 31 innings for the Yankees in 5 games (4 starts); 5-0.
The 2021 season is half over and deGrom has 85 innings. 162 innings are needed to qualify for leading in non-total stats, like ERA and ERA+. deGrom is dazzling people with 0.95 ERA and 402 ERA+.
deGrom led the National League in ERA+ once: 218 in 2018. That's the only year deGrom led in ERA: 1.70.
Babe Ruth led in those only once also: 1916. ERA+ 158, ERA 1.75.
Sandy Koufax 382 SO one season, four no-hitters; led:
ERA+: 190, 186
ERA: his last five years: 2.54, 1.88, 1.74, 2.04, 1.77.
Pedro Martinez led:
ERA+: 291, 243, 219, 211, 202
ERA: 1.74, 1.90, 2.07, 2.22, 2.26
And deGrom is 33 years old. 33. Koufax was not yet 31 in his final regular season game and he is more than 1,000 innings ahead of deGrom. deGrom has 200 innings in three seasons. He would need four more seasons with 200 innings just to catch Koufax. deGrom is very unlikely to get anywhere near Martinez. Next up for deGrom: relief ace Rivera. deGrom should pass Rivera this season. He needs only 30 more innings. And to not wrestle with any more Met teammates.
