The 2022 season started a week late because of the extended negotiations between the league and players association to create a new collective bargaining agreement. The number of games could have been reduced. But MLB stayed with the 162 game schedule. It absorbed some games and reduced off days.
But there is an extra series being played after today, which should have been the final day with all teams playing at the same time to eliminate any advantage in knowing whether your final game impacted your status in the post season tournament.
Most teams will play three more games. The Yankees, however, will play four more games, including a split day/night doubleheader on Tuesday.
Yankee slugger Aaron Judge gets four more games to hit his 62nd Home Run (HR). The Yankees are the only team to have multiple players who hit at least 60 HR in a season.
Babe Ruth 60 in 1927 (154 game schedule)
Roger Maris 61 in 1961
Aaron Judge 61 in 2022
Giants: Barry Bonds 73
Cardinals: Mark McGwire 70, 65
Cubs: Sammy Sosa 66, 64, 63
Aaron Judge and the rest of the Yankee players will play those four games on the road against the Texas Rangers. Other than Judge going for the regular season HR record, these four games are meaningless.
It's obvious that without those extra games in 1961, Roger Maris would not have exceeded Babe Ruth's total of 60 HR. Would the people who dismiss that fact be upset if Aaron Judge played in a shorter season and had his pursuit of 60 cut short? That could easily have happened.
Let's see if Aaron Judge hits Home Runs in Texas and exceeds the total of 61 HR hit by Roger Maris.
Ruth and Judge tied through 154 games at 60. Maris 58. Ghost of the Bambino? Tuesday, September 27, 2022
In 1920 Ruth out homered every other team in the AL. In 1927 Ruth did it again when the Philadelphia Athletics were second to Ruth with 56 Home Runs led by Hall of Famer Al Simmons 15.
Ruth hit two Home Runs in Yankee game 153.
To be continued.
