Why is Yankee general manager Brian Cashman firing the manager's hitting coach?

Isn't a MLB team manager a line manager and shouldn't that manager hire and fire his direct report coaches? It's a rhetorical question. So is:

Why is a weasel like Yankee general manager Brian Cashman intruding and firing the hitting coach as Cashman announced yesterday?

"I don't make these decisions lightly," Cashman said. "I've never not been willing to make a decision like this but with careful consideration, I decided as we move forward, we have a sprint here in the second half, I felt like this was necessary." ...

It is New York's first in-season coaching change since Nardi Contreras replaced Billy Connors in July 1995 as pitching coach on Buck Showalter's staff.

This is the 25th anniversary of Brian Cashman being promoted to general manager of the New York Yankees: February 3, 1998...

... in the last 22 years that Cashman has been general manager, the Yankees have won the World Series only once, in 2009. That means two dry spells of:

8 years: 2001-2008

13 years: 2010-2022 ... and counting

In what Yankee universe would that be considered successful? ...

In 2009 the Yankees won their only World Series since 2000 and had the highest payroll:

1. Yankees: $210 million

2. Red Sox: $125 million.

And the 2009 Yankees still had the core four: Derek Jeter, Jose Posada, Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera.
