New Yankee SS rookie Home Run record set by Anthony Volpe. Sunday, August 13, 2023
Shortstop rookie Home Run record: Nomar Garciaparra. Sunday, August 13, 2023
Data derived from https://stathead.com/tiny/WlBmW
Bold indicates maximum. Red indicates minimum in a column, except SS HR where it shows fewer HR than the total HR.
Unfortunately for 2023 Yankee rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe, he is dead last in this list in BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+ through August 13, 2023.
The order of the original list is slightly altered to reflect only home runs hit while playing shortstop. For instance, DeJong is dropped from 4th to 11th. Data to the right of the league (Lg) column is original and total, including non shortstop numbers.
Mr. Cub Ernie Banks had two rookie home runs left ambiguous in baseball-reference.com but there is nothing in his fielding data nor the box scores nor in his home run log to suggest that Banks was playing anywhere but shortstop when he hit those home runs.
Garciaparra: the most home runs but not the best home run rate (AB/HR); that goes to Story. Garciaparra has the most AB and PA.
Tatis has the most dominant numbers, leading in everything where Volpe is last: BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+. Tatis also had the fewest games (84), although Cruz had the fewest SS AB and PA.
Seven of the 15 in this list through 2022 finished #1 in Rookie of the Year awards (ROY). Three finished #2.
Although initially inspired by Anthony Volpe setting the Yankee rookie shortstop home run record, this research led to satisfying insight for a key fielding position.
