2023 World Series teams: lowest regular season Win Total & Win% of any WS pairs.

Click link to view the data. It's regular season wins 1903-2023.

It includes 1904 when there was no WS but I wanted it for comparison.

Minimum games: 140 to include 1919 and 1995. 1919 was the Black Sox scandal. In 1995 Cleveland was 100-44. It results in 117 records.

Only the 1973 Mets (82) and 2006 Cardinals (83) had fewer wins in WS than Arizona. Amazingly, the Cardinals beat 95 win Detroit. Mets had the fewest wins and lowest winning average of any team to play in the WS. Cardinals had the lowest winning average of any WS winning team.

Three teams in 2023 won at least 100 games but all three lost the first series that they played:

Baltimore: 2023 AL Division Series Texas Rangers over Baltimore Orioles (3-0)

Atlanta: 2023 NL Division Series Philadelphia Phillies over Atlanta Braves (3-1)

Los Angeles: 2023 NL Division Series Arizona Diamondbacks over Los Angeles Dodgers (3-0)

Below are five years when the teams had the same number of wins but in 1903 and 1951 they had different numbers of losses. In 1951 the New York Giants played three extra games against Brooklyn to break a tie. The American League (AL) team won all five World Series. Also, note the tie games in the right columns.

Only 4 of the 8 with more regular season wins won the WS. 1969 had the biggest difference (9) and the team with fewer wins had an upset WS win.

It's ironic that 2017, 2018 and 2019 all had at least 200 total regular season wins and that 2023 had the lowest total (174) of all the seasons in this data set. And 2020 was excluded because it was only 60 games.

The biggest spread (23) had the biggest upset: White Sox over Cubs in 1906. Cubs had the highest winning average and the biggest difference in winning average. Only the 1954 Cleveland Indians lost despite having a big edge in regular season wins.

The Yankees had a big edge four times and won them all: 1927, 1932, 1961, 1998.

32 of 116 (27.5%) WS had a difference in regular season wins of at least 10.

Neither of the two teams with the most wins, 116, won the WS. The Chicago Cubs lost WS to the Chicago White Sox, who won only 93, 23 fewer than the Cubs. That's the biggest spread for any WS. The Seattle Mariners lost to the Yankees in the semi-final: ALCS.

The 1906 Cubs had the highest Winning Average (it's not a percentage) in the group. Let's look at the teams with the highest Winning Average:
