2023 WS:

Arizona 84-78  .5185

Texas 90-72  .5556

Combined Totals: 174-150  .537    fewest wins, most losses, lowest winning average (not percent)

Only the 1973 Mets (82) and 2006 Cardinals (83) had fewer wins in WS than Arizona. Amazingly, the Cardinals beat 95 win Detroit. Mets had the fewest wins and lowest winning average of any team to play in the WS. Cardinals had the lowest winning average of any WS winning team.

Bruce Bochy has managed three teams over 26 seasons:

San Diego: 12 1995-2006

San Francisco: 13  2007-2019

Texas: 2023

His teams are 4-1 in the World Series, including the recently completed 2023. The regular season wins of Bochy's teams is somewhat up and down. Look for yourself:

I'm backing off immediate induction into HoF, which was my initial reaction to his winning in his first year managing Texas: 2023.

Bochy's most wins: 98. Aaron Boone beats that in 3 of his first 4 full seasons managing the Yankees (but without a World Series appearance). Bochy's 98 win team played a team that had BIG wins: Yanks 114 in 1998.

Bochy's other WS teams won 92, 94, 88, 90. But he played teams that won: 90, 88, 89, 84. Of those four, the only year his team had fewer regular season wins was 2014 v. KC by only one game: 89-88.

Bochy team - WS opponent:
1998: SD 98-114=-16  loss to Yanks
2010: SF 92-90=2  Texas
2012: SF 94-88=6  Detroit
2014: SF 88-89=-1  KC
2023: TX 90-84=6  AZ

We could conclude that Bochy was skilled in winning all four WS with modest win totals for his pennant winners. However, Bochy may have been lucky in that those teams faced teams with even more modest totals 3 of 4 times.

Good or lucky?
