2024 World Series: New York Yankees v. Los Angeles Dodgers (who just eliminated the New York Mets). Starts in a few days.
As the great Yogi (Berra) would say: it's déjà vu all over again.
2000 was an all New York World Series: Yankees beat Mets 4-1.
The Yanks lost to the Florida Marlins, another expansion team, in the 2003 World Series.
2009 was the most recent time that the Yankees played in the World Series: beat Phillies.
The Mets lost to another expansion team, the Kansas City Royals, in the 2015 World Series. Mets won the World Series twice:
1969: Mets beat Baltimore Orioles1986: Mets beat Boston Red Sox.
1903-1952 the National League (NL) and American League (AL) were stable, no franchise movements, no expansion teams; 8 teams in each league for a total of 16 teams.
The norm was cities having multiple teams:
New York: Yankees, Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers
Chicago: White Sox, Cubs
Boston: Red Sox, Braves
Philadelphia: Athletics (As), Phillies
St. Louis: Cardinals, Browns
That's 11 of the 16 teams. Single teams in the 5 other cities:
Detroit Tigers
Cleveland Indians
Cincinnati Reds
Pittsburgh Pirates
Washington Senators
The first all New York World Series:

1955: Brooklyn Dodgers beat New York Yankees
1956: New York Yankees beat Brooklyn Dodgers
1957: Milwaukee Braves beat New York Yankees
1958: New York Yankees beat Milwaukee Braves
In 6 of the 10 both teams were based in New York City. Five Yankees - Dodgers.
Ironically, in 1959 the Dodgers beat the White Sox in the World Series but by then the Dodgers had moved to Los Angeles.
Franchise moves:
1953: Boston Braves to Milwaukee and then to Atlanta in 1966.
1954: St. Louis Browns to Baltimore and name changed to Orioles.
1955: Philadelphia Athletics (As) to Kansas City, then to Oakland in 1968.
1958: Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles.
1958: New York Giants to San Francisco.
1961: Washington Senators to Minneapolis and name changed to Minnesota Twins.
Starting in 1961 14 new expansion teams were added increasing the number from 16 to 30 teams.
1960-1964: Yankees won 5 consecutive AL pennants. Played former NY teams twice:
1962: New York Yankees beat San Francisco Giants

Let the games begin!

I can’t wait to hear your take on those first two games. Mainstream commentating is lame and unimaginative.
