Mt. Rushmore pitchers: Dodgers, Giants, Yankees, Braves.

Mt. Rushmore: Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle. Giants come close.  Tuesday, June 25, 2024

Baseball players only, no pitchers.

Two exclusions:

Relief pitchers:

Baseball Reference:

Data Notes

500 IP or 50 decisions required for career rate statistics

____________________________

I consider both numbers ridiculously low. This in addition to my usual inclination to not consider relief pitchers, I am ignoring them here. It really only impacts the Yankees who have Mariano Rivera popping up, sometimes at the top.

Before 1900:

Different rules, pitching 400 innings in a season, ... No. Only pitchers since 1901.

If they pitched their entire career for that team, then the name is bold. Giant Mathewson and Yankee Gomez each pitched in one game for another team at the end.

Innings and other stuff are only for that team.

The four Dodgers were pretty obvious. Plus they had a solid #5: Don Sutton 1966-1980, 1988. 3,816 innings for the Dodgers. Dazzy Vance lead NL in SO 1922-1928; in 1924 Vance had more SO than the next two pitchers combined (135+86=221):

Strikeouts
1.Vance • BRO262
2.Grimes • BRO135
3.Luque • CIN86
4.Morrison • PIT85
5.Kaufmann • CHC79
6.Keen • CHC75
7.Aldridge • CHC74
8.Ring • PHI72
Nehf • NYG72
Donohue • CIN72

The top three Giants were easy but #4 was a complete fill in the blank.

Similarly, the top three Yankees were obvious. #4 was a bit difficult but a natural choice.

Spahn #1 was very easy for the Braves. Maddux even with the fewest innings was an #2. Then it got dicey, mostly between Glavine and Phil Niekro (1964-1983, 1987; 4,622 innings). The Braves years for Smoltz reflect his missing the entire 2000 season after which he was a relief specialist for four years followed by three good years as a starter again, including leading the league in wins with 16 in 2006 at age 39. Except for 15 innings by Spahn before his military service, all the Braves were post WWII (1946).

At least you exclude relief pitchers. After all, John Tyler and Millard Fillmore aren't on Mount Rushmore.
