The battle for catching dominance continued with Campanella hitting 41 homers, second in the city to Duke Snider's 42, which boosted the Duke over the Mick for all city center fielder.  Willie Mays was still in the Army along with Dodger starter Don Newcombe.  However, lefty starter Whitey Ford returned to the Yankees after a two year Army stint.

Yankee Eddie Lopat was all city lefty starter for the fourth consecutive season.  Carl Erskine was all city righty starter for the first time.  The Dodgers took 7 of 8 starting positions, with Jim Gilliam replacing Jackie Robinson at 2B and Robinson beating tough competition in left field.  3B: Giant Hank Thompson.  SS was very close with Reese edging out Dark and Rizzuto.

The Yankees again beat the loaded Dodger lineup in the World Series, setting a record with their fifth consecutive championship, passing the Yankee championship teams of 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939 led by Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio.
