2017 Astros 2-1 ALCS scores against the Yankees reviewed.

Cheaters! OK, we got that out of the way. Now let's look at some facts.

While many want to simply cry (pun intended) CHEATERS, cheating does not mean that the cheaters will automatically win. More to the point, how did the Astros type of cheating improve their run production and/or prevention.

Sign Stealing: knowledge v. certainty. Saturday, February 15, 2020

The Astros used electronic means against the rules to detect the opposing team's signs to tell the pitcher what pitch to throw. The person sending such signs to the pitcher is the catcher but the signs could originate with others, such as the manager or pitching coach. Amateur video of the 2019 pennant winning home run by Jose Altuve off Aroldis Chapman clearly shows that someone at the far home plate side of the Yankee dugout in Houston is sending the sign to Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez, who signaled to the Yankee pitcher Chapman. No electronic means necessary. Everyone could see the signs.

Boone and/or Rothschild appear to give signs when Altuve homers to win 2019 pennant. Tuesday, November 19, 2019

The understanding is that the Astros only cheated at home in Houston.

2017 ALCS: Astros beat Yankees 4 games to 3. The home team won all seven games. Astros won in Houston:
1: 2-1
2: 2-1
6: 7-1
7: 4-0

Games 6 and 7 were not impacted unless you're a nut case.

Game one: both Astro runs were scored in the fourth inning and both with a runner on second base. That means that the runner could see the signs. No electronic means necessary. The Yankees scored their lone run in the 9th.

Game two: Carlos Correa drove in both Astro runs, neither with a runner on second, so cheating could have helped him. Correa homered off Yankee starter Luis Severino, who may have the problem of tipping his pitches, especially back then.

Tipping pitches seems MUCH more prevalent than sign stealing. Monday, February 3, 2020

The 1-1 tie was broken in the 9th when the Yankees sent in their ace relief pitcher, none other than ... Aroldis Chapman, fresh after getting a blown save in the 8th inning of game 7 of the 2016 World Series pitching for the Cubs against Cleveland; Chapman then pitched a shutout 9th and was the winning pitcher. Astros beat Chapman in game 2 2017 ALCS when Altuve singled and Correa doubled him in.

Did Astros time machine rob 2016 Cleveland and 1951 Brooklyn? There's no crying in baseball. Thursday, February 6, 2020

I'm a Yankee fan and it pains me to admit that Yankee fans, except for me as documented in this blog, are as big a bunch of whining cry babies as fans of other teams ... OK, maybe not Mets and Red Sox fans. But, still, it's a disconcerting fact.
__________________________

The Yankees could have won game two only if BOTH Astro runs scored because of cheating, which we'll never know. Even if Correa had known the pitch, we don't know if that enabled him to homer and double.

The Yankees lost that 2017 ALCS to the Astros because in the four games in Houston the Yankees scored these runs: 1,1,1,0. The Astros cheating had nothing to do with the Yankees scoring so few runs. End of (rational) story.
