Manager Joe Girardi may be the scapegoat for the failure of the Yankees. From Girardi up to the owners, the Steinbrenner Kids, Joe is the only one who is not responsible for the failures. In 2013 and 2014 Girardi boosted the performance of the Yankees by six and seven games respectively.
real v. Pythagorean won-loss estimation
2012 95-67 95-67 even
2013 85-77 79-83 plus 6
2014 84-78 77-85 plus 7
2015 87-75 88-74 minus 1
Had the Yankees finished 2013 and 2014 with fewer than 80 wins, the team might have been better off. But Yankee general manager Brian Cashman should have been aware that the team was not nearly as good as its record suggested and Cashman should have acted accordingly. He did just the opposite, maybe to hide his mistakes from the Steinbrenner Kids.
